SMS Consent & Opt-In Policy

Last updated: July 16, 2026

SMS opt-in is voluntary and separate from our core service. Burner Boxx does not require user accounts, logins, or signups. Consent to receive SMS messages is collected through a dedicated opt-in mechanism with a checkbox that is unchecked by default.

01Opt-In Method

How users consent: Users provide their mobile number on our dedicated SMS opt-in page (burnerboxx.com/sms-optin) and must manually check a checkbox labeled "I consent to receive SMS messages from Burner Boxx." The checkbox is unchecked by default — no consent is presumed.

At the point of purchasing a subscription or temporary phone number that includes SMS functionality, users are presented with a consent checkbox within the checkout modal. The purchase cannot proceed until the box is actively checked by the user.

  • ▸Active consent required: The checkbox is unchecked by default. The user must take an affirmative action (checking the box) to opt in.
  • ▸No pre-checked boxes: We never pre-check consent boxes. Consent is never implied from inactivity, existing email usage, or any other service interaction.
  • ▸Point of collection: Consent is collected at the exact moment the user provides their phone number or purchases a plan that includes SMS features.

02What Messages Users Receive

Users who opt in will receive the following types of messages:

  • ▸Verification codes & OTPs: One-time passwords and verification codes delivered to the user's temporary phone number for use with third-party services.
  • ▸Inbound SMS notifications: Notifications that an SMS has been received on a temporary number.
  • ▸Service alerts: Expiration warnings for temporary numbers (e.g., "Your number expires in 1 hour").
  • ▸Account recovery: Restore codes and recovery-related messages for subscription restoration (no login required).
  • ▸Admin approvals: 4-digit authorization codes for sensitive admin actions (domain rotation, number rotation).

03Message Frequency

Frequency varies by usage. Users receive messages only when triggered by an action they initiated (e.g., signing up for a service that sends a verification code) or when a temporary number is nearing expiration. We do not send marketing, promotional, or advertising SMS messages.

Typical frequency: 1–10 messages per temporary number session, depending on how many services the user interacts with. Recovery code requests are rate-limited to 1 per minute, max 5 per hour.

04Voluntary Consent — Not a Condition of Service

Opting in to SMS is not required to use Burner Boxx. The core temporary email service functions fully without any SMS opt-in. Users can:

  • ▸Use temporary email addresses without providing a phone number.
  • ▸Browse the website, read the blog, and access all public pages without opting in.
  • ▸Purchase VPN subscriptions without opting in to SMS.
  • ▸Use the Developer API without opting in to SMS (API uses webhook delivery, not SMS).

SMS opt-in is collected only when a user actively chooses to use a feature that requires SMS delivery — such as obtaining a temporary phone number or requesting account recovery via SMS.

05Opt-Out Instructions

Users can opt out at any time. The following opt-out methods are supported:

  • ▸Reply STOP: Unsubscribes the user immediately. No further messages will be sent to that number.
  • ▸Reply HELP: Returns help information including how to opt out and contact support.
  • ▸Reply UNSUBSCRIBE: Also triggers opt-out (same as STOP).
  • ▸Automatic expiration: Temporary numbers expire automatically, ending all SMS delivery to that number.

Opt-out is processed immediately. The user will receive one final confirmation message acknowledging the opt-out request, then no further messages will be sent.

06Data Sharing & Privacy

We do not share or sell SMS opt-in data. Specifically:

  • ▸No third-party sharing: Mobile phone numbers, SMS opt-in data, and text messaging consent are not shared with or sold to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
  • ▸Service providers only: Mobile information is shared only with our SMS service provider (Twilio) for the sole purpose of delivering messages. Twilio does not use your number for marketing.
  • ▸Consent is non-transferable: Opt-in consent cannot be transferred, sold, or assigned. It remains a direct 1:1 agreement between the user and Burner Boxx.
  • ▸No marketing messages: We never send marketing, promotional, or advertising SMS. All messages are transactional and service-related only.

See our full Privacy Policy (Section 5.5) for additional details on SMS data handling.

07Carrier Compliance

Burner Boxx complies with all applicable telecom carrier requirements, including:

  • ▸A2P 10DLC: All application-to-person messaging is sent through Twilio's registered A2P 10DLC campaign.
  • ▸TCPA compliance: We obtain express written consent (via checkbox) before sending any SMS message.
  • ▸CTIA guidelines: Our messaging content and opt-in/opt-out flows follow CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices.
  • ▸Message & data rates: Users are informed that message and data rates may apply.

08Consent Record

When a user opts in, we record:

  • ▸The mobile number provided.
  • ▸A timestamp of when consent was given.
  • ▸The consent text that was displayed (the exact checkbox label).
  • ▸The IP address (hashed) for fraud prevention — not linked to user identity.

Consent records are retained for the duration of the user's active service plus 90 days, then automatically purged.
